The RDWW JV Working Group and the Community
The Rotary Dolphin Wishing Well at Hillarys Boat Harbour came to fruition due to the combined organisational efforts and the support of members of the Rotary Clubs of Hillarys and Wanneroo.
The two clubs formed a joint venture working group for the project in 2004, and met frequently in what was to become a ten year exercise costing almost four times the original budget estimate.
Factors which contributed to the original cost overruns are attributed to the increase in material prices over time, as well as the more complicated and robust engineering which was required after the decision was made to allow the dolphin structure to rotate when coins are inserted.
Essential to the successful completion of the project was the support of The State Government of Western Australia (through The Department of Transport) – which provided the purpose built site with a 25 year lease; Lotterywest, with a generous grant to assist in the acquisition of the dolphin sculpture; The City of Joondalup – which coordinated a Bi-Centennial Grant; Rotary International, through the provision of a Project CAP Grant; Austral Wright Pty Ltd – which donated all of the stainless steel in the moat section of the wishing well; and many others, some of whom have requested anonymity.
In addition, there has been enthusiastic support from both the local and business community of Western Australia – which collectively provided the majority of funds that were finally required – making it possible for the Rotary Dolphin Wishing Well to become a reality. Thank you to all of the supporters, including the overseas donors!
